Derby art on 30 Rock? Wha?

Hey all,
I just wanted to share a little tidbit of fun that raised it's head during the recent premiere of "30 Rock" on NBC. My Elvis Costello inspired "Death Wears a Big Hat" print made an appearance in Liz Lemon's office, seen in the image above, directly above Liz's head. In an attempt to make a long story short, Tina's older brother is a buddy of mine as well as a big Elvis Costello fan. Tina is an enthusiastic fan of EC as well, so Peter gave the framed and matted pic to his sister as a birthday gift. It graced the wall of her dressing room until she decided to give me worldwide exposure, and added it to the set. It was quite a nice surprise... Thanks for the "shout-out", Tina!

I decided to try and show what video game characters might do after a long hard day of fighting off a gorilla, chasing after a hungry yellow sphere, our endlessly pouring beers for thirsty customers (bartenders are never off-duty...). This was done using Micron ink pens and Prismacolor markers. The original piece and a very small edition of prints will be available at the show, and on the gallery's website the day after the show.

Hey all,
Taking a moment to show off my submission for this year's Crazy 4 Cult 5 taking place on Friday July 8th at Gallery 1988: Melrose in Los Angeles. My piece is based on Stanley Kubrick's "A Clockwork Orange" using familiar elements and terms/phrases from the film and incorporating them into a tattoo inspired design. If you're in the Los Angeles area, this weekend, stop by and "viddy well" all of the wonderful art. It's "real horrorshow"...

The print is an 18" x 24" 3-color screen print, a print run of 100, and available the night of the show at the gallery and the next day on the website (http://gallery1988.com/) for $35.

Gallery 1988 and the Autumn Society of Philadelphia are proud to present the " 3B Show: Beetlejuice, Back to the Future, and Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure/Bogus Journey" tonight at Gallery 1988 Venice, located at 214 Pier Avenue in beautiful Santa Monica, CA. This 12" x 24" 3-color screen print as part of a tryptic with fellow Deviant artists "Strongstuff" (Tom Whalen) [link] and "Montygog" (Dave Perillo) [link] who based their posters on Beetlejuice and Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, respectively. We, as the "STD Collective", decided to create poster advertisements reflecting on specific aspects of each film. I choose one of the most important plot points to the first Back to the Future film, the "Enchantment under the Sea" dance. I wanted to let everyone here know that I will be having my first solo show of work on Friday, August 6th, 6-9 pm, at the Primer Microgallery in Hatboro, PA as part of Hatboro's "First Friday" event. It will be a collection of both older and newer work, originals and prints, most of which will be available for sale.

It's a great location, and I am honored to have been invited to show my work at this small, but very hip, design firm/microgallery.

This show, hosted by the Autumn Society of Philadelphia (theautumnsociety.blogspot.com), will also have a special tie-in with the west coast through the efforts of Gallery1988 (www.nineteeneightyeight.com) who will be offering limited print runs for sale of selected works, including the above "OG: Original Gamer".

The fun does not end there, as Doctor Octorock (www.doctoroctoroc.com) will be in attendence, providing music inspired by 8-bit videogame soundtracks...

Even though "The Shadow" made his claim to fame mainly as a radio show, he did eventually find his way to "pulps" and comic books, therefore making him fair game to pay homage to for this show.

The 1994 film aside, "The Shadow" celebrates quite a long and respected history as one of the first "Mystery Men" to capture the imagination of many a young fan, even inspiring the creators of such popular characters as the Batman, and the Green Hornet...

Howdy folks,
Just popping in to show off a new piece that I just finished for an upcoming show called "80s POP!" that will be taking place in Olde City, Philly this coming first Friday, June 5th at Brave New Worlds Comics on 2nd between Market and Arch streets.

I hope I'm not dating myself by my choice in subject matter, but I remembered how enthralled I was by this new show that was on MTV (back when it had cool programming) that I would have to sneak downstairs late Sunday nights with the volume down low so my folks wouldn't wake up and scream at me for watching TV at some ungodly hour (I think it was 11:00, but I guess my folks went to sleep early...)

Anyway, over 20 years later, I am still fascinated not only by the 4 lads from Scumbag College, but British Comedy in general (which explains my "Man-Crush" on Simon Pegg, more on that later....)

Anybody who knows me is well aware that I am a HUUUUUUGE fan of Elvis Costello. A few years ago, I was inspired by a lyric from one of his songs and came up with the "Death Wears a Big Hat" illustration that I originally posted here on my blog in '06. So last week, my buddy Peter who is also a big "EC" fan tells me he's got the opportunity to spend some quality time with our hero, and asks me if I've got any prints of my "Death..." illustration. I passed a couple of copies over to him, in the hopes that Peter would be able to get them to Elvis and be able to hang out with him a bit, and get one signed for me. Needless to say, he enjoyed the art, and was nice enough to pose with it for a photo...

Exene Cervenka, The First Lady of Punk. I finally got to see X a few summers ago for the first time. I've gotten to see them a few times since then, and they will always be one of the greatest bands to see live. They've still got it after all these years...

I did this one with a Sharpie marker, and a pack of color highlighters at work one afternoon, waiting for the "work whistle to blow". It's a bit rough, but I'm proud of it anyway...

Here's one that I just finished this morning... I noticed recently on DrawingBoard.org in a "jam thread" focusing on Wolverine, that almost every single image of logan showed him with at least one claw (some of which cleverly selected the "middle" claw) in not all six claws, in some cases covered with blood... I chose to show Logan in a more relaxed pose, probably right after a danger room exercise. As always, let me know what you think...

Marty Nodell 1915-2006

Marty Nodell, the creator of the Golden Age Green Lantern passed away this weekend at the age of 91. I don't have anything to say that won't be said by other people, being said better by them than I could ever hope to. I only met Marty briefly in "artist alley" at a convention a few years ago, but have been inspired by his greatest creation my entire life. I am reposting an image that was created by Jeff Kilpatrick and myself that I finally sent it to Marty a few months ago. Being that Marty was born and raised in Philadelphia, we thought that we would honor Marty with our own little tribute on behalf of ourselves and the other members of the Philadelphia Cartoonist Society.

Rest in Peace, Marty. You have inspired us all...

This was done on a lark as a tribute to another of my musical heroes, Mr. Tom Waits! His new 3 disk collection entitled "Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers, and Bastards" comes out tomorrow (Nov. 21st), as it shall quickly be added to my x-mas wish list (does anyone else remember the Sears Holiday Catalog? Got a little busy, from Baltimore Comic-con then directly to this little project. I was lucky enough to be asked to participate in a group show recognizing beauty and majesty of the original 33 1/3 rpm vinyl album. It's a traveling, reoccurring show that takes place through France, mostly around Paris. I completed this and another "EC" themed piece... This is a piece that I did with my good pal and artist extraordinaire, Jeffro Kilpatrick, as a tribute to Marty Nodell, the creator of the original Green Lantern. Jeffro drew the children and the cityscape behind them. I drew the rest, then inked and colored it using Dr. Martin's dyes (not to be confused with Doc Marten's boots) I'll be sending the framed original to Mr Nodell this week...

Finally, I have begun my journey into the technological paradise that is the 21st century... After an all too brief visit with friends in Hoboken, NJ (Sorry, Matt...) I return home to find that my new blog has been created (Thanks, Matt!)

Check in often for sketches, complete illustrations, rants, raves, and reviews of anything and everything having to do with pop-culture: Movies, Music, Comics, Cartoons, whatever....

The above post came about as a result of helping out a buddy with putting a cover together for his upcoming 'zine "Free 4 All", and being rewarded by the aforementioned friend with a full page to do whatever I wanted with it... Upon completing the finished black and white image (If it was printed in full color, it would be a magazine), I heared this thing screaming for color (it was screaming, I heard it!). So a few hours and a hand full of prismacolor markers later, this baby popped out...
